Chilliwack

James...from my Aviation Community:

Subject: CHILLIWACK CYCW MF NOTAM

Just a heads up to all of you, Chilliwack Airport is now a mandatory frequency.

140449 CYXX CHILLIWACK CYCW AMEND PUB: COMM: TO READ: MF VICE ATF

Just a side note from Principal Air.

“Chilliwack being a mandatory frequency, does not mean you can do ‘straight ins’.  The airspace rules are the same as when Chilliwack was a atf, the only difference is you need a radio, and must use it, because we do not have a flight service station.

If you can pass the word around to any other aviators that you are aware of that may not know of the changes.

MF you now need a radio. No NORDO into Chilliwack. Only $200 for a good handheld, so no excuse not to have one anyway.

No ground service communication (like an FSS), so if you carefully read the TC AIM 4.6.2 and 4.6.6, you join the circuit either from 1500' (500' above circuit height) upwind crossing midfield and descending to circuit height joining on the downwind, OR directly onto the downwind leg if you have assured through communication that there is no traffic conflict.

As Anonymous said no straight-in or joining on base. Circuit size should be such that on climb you reach circuit altitude as you turn to downwind. And on turning base you could glide to the runway if the engine quit. Anything bigger is for spacing to other aircraft. If someone cuts you off because you are flying a 747 sized circuit and they can't see you don't cry about it.
