Flying to the Northwest Territories - Next summer

Mel and I are thinking of taking a couple weeks next summer to fly to Yellowknife, NWT.

I have done a preliminary outline of the trip, and it looks like we can make it on our 12 gallon tank, but it will be a lot of stops for gas.

I'd like to have atleast one other aircraft accompany us if possible, but we will make a go of it alone if we have to. All are welcome to join of course! We'd enjoy the company.

We are thinking of camping out under the wing mostly, with maybe a hotel stay once in Yellowknife.

I think it would be a great way to see some more of Canada.

I don't mind doing the legwork, figuring out what services are available at what stops along the way so we can be sure we can get gas etc. If you are interested, please let me know! I will probably put in for the time off around Christmas. I'm thinking late July and early August when the weather is best. We may have a couple bad wx days too, but we should have plenty of time.

Cheers,

Joel

What a great plan. What would be your route?

Chilliwack, Merrit, Kamloops, Blue River, Jasper, Grand Prairie, Fairview, Manning, High Level, Steen River, Hay River, Yellowknife.

This is preliminary, of course. I have to confirm we can get fuel at or around these airports, and may add or subtract an airport based on fuel requirements and proper reserve limits.

Most of you have more than 12 gallons, so I'm using the little Vagabond tank as a basis for range.

To Chilliwack: 54 miles
To Merritt: 106 miles
To Kamloops: 54 miles
To Blue River: 144 miles
To Jasper: 132 miles
To Grand Cache: 130 miles
To Grand Prairie: 118 miles
To Fairview: 190 miles
To Manning: 142 miles
To High Level: 122 miles
To Steen River: 91 miles
To Hay River: 103 miles
To Yellowknife: 119 miles

All but the last are based on driving distance, so shorter as the crow flies.

If we tried to follow the road from Hay River to Yellowknife it would be about 250 miles. We are in airplanes so we can just fly direct over great slave lake. Roads make great nav aids, and I'd plan to keep them in sight for most of the trip, except the last leg.

Mel and I have to book vacation time for this by December 31st. Is there a two week period in late July or early August that works better for anyone? Time to set a date! Hopefully someone else is interested in flying along. :)
