Hi Guys,

Because of the success of our Christmas get together lunch last year It has been suggested that we do the same this year and I have been asked to organise the event so here goes.

Same place as last year, the Big Ridge Pub on 152nd, close to king George at noon on the 18th of December. I have booked for twenty to thirty people and would like some idea of how many are coming. All are welcome, spouses, friends even Arnold.

Some of us are planning to overnight at the Texada fly in, in July. We have visited this one before and it reminds me of the great fly in we used to enjoy at Powell River. There may just be some partying happening. This is just a heads up as we have some weeks to go before the event. I hope we get a good turnout.

Our third fly out of the season was a success. A great lunch at the Pub at Quilchena. They have a new chef who is very good. Bruce brought along some friends for a first ever flight.

Cortes Island Fly Out

Well, we had the first organised fly-out of the season this long weekend. Six airplanes and crew flew to Hanson's Field on Cortes Island on a beautiful sunny day. Jim and Diane treated us royally as usual putting on a great lunch. Most of us hiked to the beach and relaxed there for a while before the flight back. A great trip and one of many we are going to plan for this flying season. We will post some pics later.

The blog has not been used much during the winter but now I invite you all to post idea's and suggestions for flights out. It would be good to have something planned most weekends for those who wish to participate.

DairyAir is ready for a new flying season.

Small improvements this year include more visible touch-down markers, and widening the runway 20 exit near the freeway by about 20'.

As always I must recommend that pilots thinking of touching down at DairyAir for the first time. Please consider flying accompanied by a another Pilot having landed here previously. Come walk the runways first, or at least call for landing instructions if possible.

Having said that.
The grass is freshly cut.
I've put the coffee on.

I keep thinking I hear the Red Baron calling for landing instructions.
It must be my Tinnitus.

Christmas lunch at the Big Ridge/PUFA

What a great turnout for lunch today. It was nice to have so many of our group together. Shades of years gone by when a Christmas get together was expected and a normal part of our group activity. I for one hope that todays event is the first of many.

Some of you may know that there is a movement to re-instate PUFA, the Pacific Ultralight Flying Association. There are many changes proposed by Transport Canada which will involve the Ultralight community and without representation our points of view will go unheard. We as a group need representation. Fred Glasbergen spoke for us in Ottawa as the Pacific Ultralight Flying Association in favour of Passenger Carrying when the Eastern group UPAC was fervently against it. Fred has volunteered his time and expertise to be a spokesperson for the West Coast pilot community but needs your support so that we can speak as a group. Robbie Barron has volunteered to be part of the executive and I hope you will give both Rob and Fred your full support. Comments please.

Fly with the eagles

The eagles are back. It is the time of year for the eagle migration to their feeding grounds at the Harrison and Chehalis river estuaries. Numbers of birds are usually around the 200-300 mark but this year a record 1500-2000 birds are expected so you guys flying the valley need to be on the lookout.

I thought you might be interested in this. Bob Barron and myself were playing around on the gravel bars today and ended up landing on one with a nice smooth sandy area. I've seen aircraft in there many times. I think you and your friend with the 172 may even have landed in there on occasion.

In any case we landed there today, and there was a 180 already there with several people already walking around enjoying the day. As we walked over to say hello we were approached by a couple of parks bc volunteer wardens asking if we knew that the island was an ecological reserve? Of course we didn't. It isn't marked on the aviation chart. I pulled out my laptop and we checked the Parks BC website and the map they provide doesn't even clearly indicate the area as ecological reserve. It is however a reserve and apparently we aren't welcome there with our aircraft.

Anyway, here is the link to the Parks BC page with the info and a google earth pic of the area in question. Fortunately it's the only ecological reserve in the area, all other gravel bars appear to be fair game.

Vargus Island 2009! Our first time landing on the beach. An amazing day with a little hiccup on departuref. The engine started to sputter immediately on take off, so we circled and landed as quickly as possible. With advise from our fellow pilots, over the radio, we did a second run up, turned on the carb heater and fuel pump... and took off again. This time the engine purrrred.

We're ready for a second visit. Anyone interested in a fly out?

WHAT A PITY KULULA DOESN'T FLY INTERNATIONALLY - WE SHOULD SUPPORT THEM IF ONLY FOR THEIR HUMOUR - SO TYPICALLY SOUTH AFRICAN.

Kulula is an Airline with head office situated in Johannesburg .

Kulula airline attendants make an effort to make the in-flight "safety lecture" and announcements a bit more entertaining. Here are some real examples that have been heard or reported:

On a Kulula flight, (there is no assigned seating, you sit where you want) passengers were apparently having a hard time choosing, when a
flight attendant announced, "People, people we're not picking out
furniture here, find a seat and get in it!"

On another flight with a very "senior" flight attendant crew, the pilot
said, "Ladies and gentlemen, we've reached cruising altitude and will be
turning down the cabin lights. This is for your comfort and to enhance
the appearance of your flight attendants."

On landing, the stewardess said, "Please be sure to take all of your
belongings. If you're going to leave anything, please make sure it's
something we'd like to have."

"There may be 50 ways to leave your lover, but there are only 4 ways out of this airplane."

"Thank you for flying Kulula. We hope you enjoyed giving us the business as much as we enjoyed taking you for a ride."

As the plane landed and was coming to a stop at Durban Airport , a lone voice came over the loudspeaker: "Whoa, big fella. WHOA!"

After a particularly rough landing during thunderstorms in the Karoo , a
flight attendant on a flight announced, "Please take care when opening
the overhead compartments because, after a landing like that, sure as
hell everything has shifted."

From a Kulula employee: " Welcome aboard Kulula 271 to Port Elizabeth .
To operate your seat belt, insert the metal tab into the buckle, and
pull tight. It works just like every other seat belt; and, if you don't
know how to operate one, you probably shouldn't be out in public
unsupervised."

"In the event of a sudden loss of cabin pressure, masks will descend
from the ceiling. Stop screaming, grab the mask, and pull it over your
face. If you have a small child travelling with you, secure your mask
before assisting with theirs. If you are travelling with more than one

Weather at our destination is 50 degrees with some broken clouds, but
we'll try to have them fixed before we arrive. Thank you, and remember, nobody loves you, or your money, more than Kulula Airlines."

emergency water landing, please paddle to shore and take them with our compliments."

And from the pilot during his welcome message: "Kulula Airlines is
pleased to announce that we have some of the best flight attendants in
the industry. Unfortunately, none of them are on this flight!"

On Kulula flight 255 just after a very hard landing in Cape Town , the flight attendant came on the intercom and said, "That was quite a bump and I know what y'all are thinking. I'm here to tell you it wasn't the airline's fault, it wasn't the pilot's fault, it wasn't the flight
attendant's fault. It was the asphalt."

On a Kulula flight into Cape Town on a particularly windy and
bumpy day, during the final approach the Captain really had to fight
it. After an extremely hard landing, the Flight Attendant said, "Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to The Mother City. Please remain in your seats with your seat belts fastened while the Captain taxis what's left of our airplane to the gate!"

Another flight attendant's comment on a less than perfect landing:
"We ask you to please remain seated as Captain Kangaroo bounces us to the terminal."

An airline pilot wrote that on this particular flight he had hammered
his ship into the runway really hard. The airline had a policy which
required the first officer to stand at the door while the passengers
exited, smile, and give them a "Thanks for flying our airline." He said that, in light of his bad landing, he had a hard time looking the
passengers in the eye, thinking that someone would have a smart comment.

Finally everyone had gotten off except for a little old lady walking
with a cane. She said, "Sir, do you mind if I ask you a question?"

"Why, no Ma'am," said the pilot. "What is it?" The little old lady said, "Did we land, or were we shot down?"

After a real crusher of a landing in Johannesburg , the attendant came on with, "Ladies and Gentlemen, please remain in your seats until Captain Crash and the Crew have brought the aircraft to a screeching halt
against the gate. And, once the tire smoke has cleared and the warning bells are silenced, we will open the door and you can pick your way through the wreckage to the terminal.."

Part of a flight attendant's arrival announcement: "We'd like to thank you folks for flying with us today. And, the next time you get the
insane urge to go blasting through the skies in a pressurized metal
tube, we hope you'll think of Kulula Airways."

Hastings Field.

There was a great turnout for the Hastings Field appreciation day and Barbeque. Around 30 airplanes including three from our group. Len Lambert flew a rescue mission for spare parts and the aviation community showed how to work together to help fix a slightly broken airplane.

The food was excellent and on behalf of our group I would like to personally thank the Hastings family for providing the venue.

The folks at Hastings field, North Pender Island are hosting thier Annual "Hastings Airstrip Appreciation Day" on Saturday August 28th 11:00am-3:00pm.

Incoming pilots are asked to monitor 123.2, make a mid field pass joining a left hand downwind, look for parking signs and clear the landing area asap.

We are getting close to our next trip. The BC Floatplane association annual fly in at Nimpo Lake. Those of you who are going should think about accommodation at the resort as it is definitely an over nighter. Freddie can help here. He flies there every year and knows who to contact.

We are planning a briefing at King George on the weekend of the July 10/11th to make sure that we are all on the same page, and frequency.

Airport Appreciation Day
The Salmon Arm Airport Airport Appreciation Day is held at the Shuswap Regional Airport in Salmon Arm, British Columbia, Canada. The 2010 event will be held all day Sunday June 27th. The event starts with a Pancake Breakfast at 8 am. Entrance through the gate is by donation. Ample aircraft parking for those that fly-in. A variety of light aircraft will be on display for viewing, with the opportunity to talk to the pilots to answer any questions

This fly out has been mentioned a few times over the last few weeks and now, here it is. Those who would like to make the trip can leave a comment so we have some idea who is going.There is a weather web cam available on the Salmon Arm flying club website.

We had a great turn out on Saturday at Cortes Island. Eight airplanes flew in for a lunch prepared with almost no notice by our gracious hosts Jim and Diane. The weather was spectacular. We will have to do this one again.

Commodore Freddie is arranging a trip to Vargas next Saturday. We have not set a wheels up time yet but hope to see you all at the strip bright and early. We will be flying to Vargas first to enjoy the beauty of the island and then on to Tofino for lunch.

KGA NOTAM: Delta Heritage is having a Junior Aviators Event this Saturday, May 29th. They will have approx. 11 aircraft departing CAK3 every 20mins past each hour, starting at 9:20 continuing until atleast 2:20. He fellow pilots James and I are flying to Sandpiper golf course on Saturday land there at about 11:30 and have some lunch, maybe even a hotdog roast ,we think that a leisurely flight on a nice Saturday not always has to go to the other side of the province or use up min. 25 gal. of fuel ,its nice to use less and have money and time left over to buy lunch and shoot the SH. so if it sound like fun. see ya there

Well, we finally have some decent weather and there are rumours of some good fly-outs being planned (or at least discussed, planned is a word mostly avoided by our group)

I for one would like to see some blog input from more people this season. There are a couple of pilots that do all the posting. This blog was formed to give you all a forum to present your point of view, share interesting stories or for destination suggestions. Please feel free to use it.

DairyAir open for landings.

G'day all.

I hope to see some activity from my flying friends this season.
Both runways are freshly cut.
I have improved the runways by widening them 15'.

Last summer was a disappointment as far as visitors were concerned.
The only planes flying in or out of DairyAir, were my own.
I did spot a couple familiar planes in the vicinity looking interested, but no commitments.

If you fly over my house at 500' (circuit altitude at DairyAir), I will listen for you on 123.5
I would prefer that pilots that have not previously landed here, come and walk the runways first.
Call at 604-794-9827, and I'll make fresh coffee.

LSA flying in Canada

It's now easier for U.S. pilots to fly their light sport aircraft into Canada, EAA said this week. Transport Canada now will treat LSAs the same as experimental aircraft. Previously, TC required U.S. pilots of LSAs to call ahead and receive authorization to fly in Canada, obtain a validation form to keep in the aircraft, and pay a $100 fee. "Now LSA owners simply have to download the Standardised Validation form, follow customs requirements, and fly," said Randy Hansen, EAA government relations director. "The $100 fee has been eliminated." TC still requires pilots to have a private pilot certificate with a valid medical -- sport pilots without an FAA medical certificate are not allowed. "But we're working on that, too," Hansen said.
The change will benefit Canadians as well as U.S. pilots, said Jack Dueck, a member of EAA's Canadian Council. "This is also good news for Canadians since it indicates a continuing effort to bring LSA to Canadian pilots and owners," Dueck said. To download a copy of the TC Standardised Validation form, go to the EAA Web site.

Beaver RX 28 test (show of ) at King George

This video clip of a Beaver RX 28 from Spectrum aircraft inc. was made back in 1988/89 at King George the single seat basic ultralight was apparently flown by a pilot from spectrum aircraft of Surrey to show of the trust he has in this aircraft, you can see his performance really good because he is flying really low(I guess it does not hurt as much if he would hit the field from this altitude instead of high :) he is wearing his helmet. do not try this at home or any where else ever !!!! :Ron fly safe

I have just received this message from the Rans Flyers group. It may be of interest to the owners of Lowrance GPS units.

This is just a heads up. Lowrance confirmed to me that they are no longer going to market aviation related GPS units.I noticed less and less GPS products on their website so I wrote them and asked when we might be seeing some new aviation models. Here is their response:"Thank you for contacting us.We will no longer be making any aviation units, we are leaving that market. Not only did they build its jet engines, but included retractable landing gear, and built it into a fully scaled model of the SR-71 that is good enough to fly. Have a look at the video link below of a performance by a stunt pilot who is, in real life a Delta Airlines pilot. His act at Air Shows is to pretend that he is a drunken spectator who rushes from the stands and jumps in a Piper Cub and takes off without any understanding of how to fly a plane.

The Piper Cub is actually specifically built to withstand enormous stress and has a very powerful engine.

This apparently is the most dangerous of Air Show acts because of the low altitude at which the pilot performs. This pilot possesses unbelievable skill, which becomes obvious in the attached video.

Bear attack

Keep the fish smell out of your airplane!!!

Apparently a bear attacked this guy's plane while parked in a remote field up
in AK. He had not cleaned out the inside after a long fishing trip and the
bear smelled it.

He had 2 new tires, 3 cases of Duct Tape and several rolls of cellophane
delivered; then went about repairing the plane so he could fly it home.

Good old duct tape!!!!

(Wonder if the repair is classified as minor or major!!!!!!)

Moral to the story: if you don’t store fish in the wings then you can probably repair it and fly it home.

Quilchena fly in

There was a great turnout at Quilchena on Sunday. 12 aircraft including three from the Thompson Valley Flying Club. The weather was spectacular and may be the last really good day for a while. There is snow on the Coquihalla today.

Lunch was good and all birds returned safely. The day was not without incident however, Ronnie Smitt's tailwheel kept jamming causing him to groundloop and bend a little metal. Nothing that can't be fixed. We are all glad that Ron made it home without further incident.

I will post some pictures in a day or two.
